Vinyl v. Guinite in Alpharetta, GA

Alpharetta, GA
Beginning the pool construction process and have found that the very few contractors who install vinyl pools are quoting approx. 50% less than quotes we have received for the same size guinite. Is there a reason(s) to avoid vinyl in this area- Alpharetta, GA north of Atlanta? Clay soil issues? Water table issues? The price difference is so substantial, I want to make sure I am not making a huge mistake if I decide to install a vinyl pool. Thank you.

Welcome to TFP.

Many prior discussions about the pros and cons...

Before we "pooled" (can I coin that phrase?!) - we looked at fiberglass and gunite (shotcrete actually). I did not really consider vinyl, but my perception was it would cost less than fiberglass or gunite. I initially expected fiberglass also to be less cost than gunite - but I found the fiberglass I was interested in was very close in price to custom gunite.

Why did I not check on vinyl? From all my reading - the liners don't last as long as expected anymore, and they continue to go up in cost. I did not want to have to replace every 7-10 years. I do realize that my mini pebble will need a redo some day - but that may be after I am done - so it may be someone else's problem.

Thank you!

I feel the most common reason people don't choose vinyl in your area is because that's not what the common practice pool is for your area, which took many years to develop. Someone seeing a vinyl pool in your yard from your area will have a sense that you went cheap. While a person from my area seeing a vinyl pool in my yard would have the sense that we chose one of the common options in our area (which has a much more even split).

Does that make any difference in how they play? No, but it can certainly affect resale.

Perhaps the sun damages liner pool "tile areas" more quickly in the south? But if so, that has probably been mitigated more recently by improvements in UV protection baked into the liners.

I just think it's the pool culture in that region.

The pool culture by me is shifting and I'm seeing more and more plaster pools going in at 'normal people houses'.

Only a few years ago we had multi million dollar houses with vinyl pools and nobody blinked. Now the 'multi million dollar' houses are in the double digit millions or dozens of millions and they all need the fanciest stuff money can buy.

The regular Joe's are following suit.

Thank you very much. This does make sense. One contractor said he could install a beautiful vinyl liner and another who installs vinyl is telling me I should try to install a gunite because that is what is common in the neighborhood.

because that is what is common in the neighborhood.
Is it your forever house or only for this stage of life? Selling one day may or may not ever matter.

It'd kinda be like guessing which clothes would be in style 50 years from now, and buying $120k worth.

Agree! In Kansas, most pools are vinyl. There are some million+ dollar homes with gunite but even a lot of our commercial pools are vinyl. Vinyl is easily 50% less than gunite in my area.

However, I have family in AZ. They were turned off by my idea of doing vinyl because it’s not the norm in AZ. Once they better under stood our area, that most have auto covers, all close for 8-9 mths of the year, etc… it made much more sense.

Hate to say it… but follow the crowd in this situation as the buyers of your home in the future will expect that.

Split the difference in upfront and long term costs and look at fiberglass. Neither side will complain. It's an upgrade to the vinyl people yet it's acceptable for most of the gunite crowd.

(Sorry I made it harder. :ROFLMAO:)

I don't think many installers will touch fiberglass in Georgia, due to the significant expansion and contraction of the clay soil, for fear of it developing cracks. They usually do extra thick gunite/shotcrete here as well for that reason.
