I need to replace my pump. Currently have a 1.0 hp single speed Hayward power flow matrix with a Hayward sand filter pro S-180T. Above ground pool size is 27’, approximately 17,205 gallons of water. Should I replace my pump with the same one or can I go up to a 1.5 hp pump? Also, should I consider getting variable speed or it that overkill for my pool size? Additionally, should I replace the sand in my sand filter this year? This will be my 5th summer with the pool. Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Single speed pumps are overkill for your wallet.

2 speed or VS pumps literally pay for themselves, possibly two or three times over.

You can run 24/7 for the cost of just a couple hours of your current pump runtime. Mine was 2.3 hours or so at high speed used the same energy as 24 hours at low speed.

A 1.5 HP would be great for you.
