I've seen the sock method recommended, and it seems to have some advantages. But is there any reason I shouldn't mix some up with pool water in a five gallon bucket with a paddle mixer and a drill? Would I be standing there mixing for hours or something?

My main goal here is to get the CYA in solution in the pool water ASAP. My pool gets a lot of sun.

You won’t sit there for hours but you’ll stand there for 1/2 an hour drilling in the bucket and then wishing you just put it in a sock and then went inside and did something else with your time. 😉

There’s no rush.

All right. The sock method it is. A word to the wise and all that.

Thanks, guys.
I put CYA in a fine mesh bag, then tie the bag to the end of my pool broom pole. I then hang the pole over the edge in front of a return and let it do it's thing. Every now and then give the bag a squeeze.
That's what I do. This bag is made of nylon and if you ask me, is the bomb for CYA. I love this thing! Here is an Amazon link to it.

You can also use an old pillow case as a bag, an old T shirt with the arms tied shut to make a bag, nylon stockings, socks, or whatever else you might have laying around. In my experience, items made of cloth are a bit dense for the CYA to escape through, so it takes a lot longer than what I would like. This nylon bag I use is a remedy to that. I can get 8 lbs of CYA dissolved into the pool in a couple or 3 hours now.

Or a Tshirt for us large pool folks that would need 15 socks hanging.

Pre TFP I tried to premix it many times and it only saturates the bucket so much before the rest won't dissolve. Time and time again I was re-pre-mixing most of the original batch in a new bucket once I poured off what did mix.

Thanks for the link. I'll be using one of those next time. This time I sacrificed a Goldtoe to the cause.

Oh No! Say it ain't true! :(
No doubt you'll love these bags. I'll never go back to socks, T Shirts or stockings.

A friend of mine is a bee keeper and he turned me on to these bags. I was helping him harvest
honey a couple of years ago and this is what he uses in his 1st step to strain the nasties out of his honey. When he broke these bags out, I instantly thought it would be perfect for CYA.

Back in the olden days, (sand filter, use of pucks) someone here recommended a big diesel fuel filter bag coupled to a return, to trap small micron particles to improve filtering. It only sort of worked. With the cart filter and swcg, no need to think about added filtering. But I had this contraption....hmmm, fill the bag with CYA, screw it on, and it worked like a charm.....overkill it that is the only use - a sock or t-shirt is cheaper, but I had it was was going to throw it out....
