Replaster Questions

So when we bought the house, the pool had been resurfaced in 2013 along with a remodel. It was finished with a quartz plaster. I am now looking at resurfacing again, and hope someone can give me some guidance. Getting quotes, and there are alot of opinions out there on materials. So far I have spoken to two companies, and am getting a bid from a third. So here are my questions:

Should the quartz surface have lasted longer than 11 years? PebbleSheen installer says that is normal for quartz, and they are not his preferred material. Claims that the PebbleSheen will last 20+ years.

If a PebbleSheen type surface is better, what about the other non PebbleSheen surfaces that are competitors? Namely Crystal stones or Mini Pebbles.

Any thoughts or if anyone knows a good installer they can recommend in the Dallas area, that would also be helpful. Thanks in advance for any assistance/advice.

Even generic plaster will last much longer than 11 years. The prep and the application is much more important to the longevity than the actual product.

If the original surface wasn’t chipped out before applying the quartz, that’s a possible cause of early failure. What is the reason for wanting to refinish the surface now?

Tops of the steps and spa seats are mottled in appearance, there is a spot near the spa that seems like it did not adhere, there are stains from mustard algae now, and the mustard algae is really persistent. There is a sneaker print in teh quartz from teh original install. Pool has not been the same since the freeze in 2021. What was once easy, has become a real chore. The folks we bought the house from seemed to have done most projects to the lowest priced bidder, and I believe that is showing with the plaster job. Should everything be chipped out? Most of the contractors here are saying not every bit needs to go.

The only thing that would mean the plaster needs to be redone is the part that did not adhere, but even that can be patched. Plaster coming off is a sign that new plaster was applied on top of old loose plaster. All the contractors say the old plaster doesn’t need to be chipped out, but not many will warranty the new work for very long so it doesn’t matter to them. If you’re spending $15k to replaster then a couple extra $k goes a long way to ensuring you get a lasting product.

All the other stuff is just cosmetic. The staining is likely just from regular algae caused by lack of adequate chlorination, or possibly metal staining cause by using Clorox xtra-blue tablets or algaecides containing copper. It’s super rare to have real mustard algae and nearly everyone who thinks they have it has plain ol boring generic algae. Got any pictures?

The time line for durability of quartz is not something you can even put a number of years on.
I have seen plaster finishes needing to be completely removed within only months of being applied.
The application process plays a large part of its length of life.
The claim of 20+ years for durability still has to do with type of material used and installation practices.

On quartz, can you elaborate? Could it go longer or shorter assuming equal product and installation process?

I have found that the installer’s feel the more agggraget in the plaster mix and exposed makes a stronger finish.
With less plaster exposed and more pebbles, staining and chemical damage is less common.
This may have to do with the longer warranty on exposed aggregate finishes.
