AquaRite GLX and varistors (thermistor)

We've had this house for 11 years pool was maybe a year old. Since then I've replaced the AquaRite board a couple times, replaced the varistor several times also. Seems like every 2 years the varistor hit's it's limit. Think I read somewhere they will take a couple surges before poofing. It happened again today, this is the 4th or 5th time in 11 years. Took the board out and the solder joints is toast. I'm just a DIYer, can barely solder, hacked up the last one.

What can I install that will help me from the many surges or spikes we get out here with rural electric? I have looked at surge protected circuit breakers, but unsure if they are resettable or not.

The Aquarite board has one thermistor and two varistors. Which is failing on you? Read Hayward Aquarite SWG - Further Reading

The Wiki discusses an upgraded thermistor you can install that has a higher current rating.

Hayward has an improved board with a K4 relay with r1.59 firmware that is supposed to fix the thermistor problems.
