Pool lighting mystery.

Hello,

New to this forum. We recently purchased our home in Mansfield TX which came with an in-ground pool. Everything seems to be in good working order except for the one pool light located at the deep end of the pool. There is a plastic box in the grass on that end which has black, white, and green wires (hot, neutral, and ground) and then there’s two fiber optic bundles one large black and the other smaller and white. Not sure if they worked with the light or were for something else. I’ll post some pics. Any thoughts?

Older pools would be using 120V lights with the 3 wires. The light wire would be inserted into the conduit in the pool and pulled to a small junction box on edge of decking. This allows the light wire to be short and easy to pull. Then another wire would go from that junction box to the equipment where it would be connected to mains power with a switch or with automation.
Maybe post a picture of your equipment pad where a light switch or other junction box would be.

Not sure what the fiber optic is for. Maybe others may have a guess.
 
Most likely, the pool had a fiber optic tower that sent light to the pool light.

Fiber optic lights never really worked and 99.999% died in less than 1 year and no one would ever fix them due to the cost and complexity, so everyone just abandoned them.

Like said above, the fiber optics are probably for a small in wall lights or perhaps a perimeter fiber optic channel light like my pool had. If the deepens light has a conduit box nearby it may not be fiber optic, but the bulb may just be burned out. Sometimes the airtight housing leaks and then shorts out the bulb inside. The deepens light should be able to be removed by removing one screw and then the bulb assembly will float up to the surface and you can put it on the deck to inspect it and change the bulb.

The portion in the pool is just a lens for the fiber optics, not a light. They are 1.5" FIP threaded ports that can accept newer LED nicheless lighting.
Be very careful with the wires in the picture. The black, especially, could be energized with 120V if a switch somewhere at your equipment is turned on. At the very least it should have tape covering the stripped portion, like the white wire.
 
Thanks for all the great input. Additional pics attached. The wires in the ground are getting 120v power from the GFI outlet which is getting 15A power from the circuit breaker panel. The switch controls the 220V power to the pumps. So from the post above I’m thinking it is not worth replacing the fiber optic control that was obviously removed at some point in the past. What would be my options for changing out the light?

Looks like the light is plastered in. How bad do you want to change it out? $$$$ or $$$$$?

That lens will unthread from the 1.5" fitting. How many lenses are there in the pool? SR Smith makes this kit specifically to replace old fiberoptic lighting (which was never that bright to begin).
