Stain Treatment and SC1000

Yes thats the risk. Especially if its been wet lately.
Do what you feel comfortable with. The exchange method is the least risky.

Thanks. Appreciate all the insight. Out of curiosity, what do you do when/if you acid wash? Doesn’t it have to be fully drained to do that?
Almost never a reason to acid wash a pool.

A pool needs to be well neglected to earn an acid wash. It is basically stripping off a layer of plaster and reducing the remaining life of the plaster.

Noted. Thanks. Yes. I’ve read some horror stories about them. I guess I’m going to end up having to leave whatever wasn’t able to come off with the AA treatment. Here are some pics of it with some of the water drained. You can see where some of it has lifted but other areas just can’t seem to get clean. I’m at about 6lbs of AA for our 18000 gallon pool. Which is way over the recommended amount. I welcome any other advice.

If you don’t mind wasting the water, you can try Jacks Magic No 2 stain and scale remover. It’s sulfamic acid and that is very good at lifting dirty scale and copper stains. The downside of sulfamic acid is that it doesn’t break down quickly and sulfamate reacts with chlorine forming a persistent CC while keeping the FC below 1ppm. It can take weeks or even months for the sulfamic acid to break down and the chlorine levels to return to normal. So we usually recommend people that do go with Jacks #2 to simply apply it, let it lift the stains and then dump the entire pool. It’s easier than waiting and dealing with false CCs and no FC.

The stain ID kit that @ajw22 linked to above has a sachet of sulfamic acid in it that would work to lighten scale and copper staining. The entire kit has a protocol of testing that leads to recommended chemicals.

Thank you. Appreciate all the additional info. As mentioned prior, I didn’t add enough polyquat 60 to start and my pool is now green and cloudy. Do I have any other choices other than to SLaM it and have to restart the process all over? I know it’s going to take a lot of chlorine to do that.

Dump the water, do a water exchange and a quick SLAM process, or a full SLAM process…

I used a product called "Stop Stains" by Suncoast. Before adding this product I dropped my chlorine to almost zero and brought the pH down to 7.0. This product says it contains Sulfamic Acid.

This poster says that the product contains sulfamic acid, but I couldn't confirm it.
