What kind of coping is this and what are my options for repair?

We're wanting to get and automatic cover, but our coping isn't in the greatest shape. Ideally I'd like to get it "resurfaced" or something prior to having the tracks installed. The coping is surrounded by concrete slab all the way around the pool. The coping itself, seems like it's some kind of cement based product sitting on top of concrete. You can see in the attached picture where some of it is flaking off. There are multiple spot like that and a fair number of cracks.

Does anyone know what this type of material this is? Are there any options for resurfacing it that doesn't require a complete tear out?

Looks like precast concrete coping.

Not much you can do with it once it begins cracking and crumbling.

You really should have an expansion joint between the coping and concrete deck to protect your bond beam from cracking. Read Expansion Joints and Coping - Further Reading

Ok, thanks. So I imagine this would breaking up and removing the existing coping. Can this be done (including addressing the missing expansion joint) without also breaking up the concrete slabs that surround the coping? What about impacts to the interior of the pool? I'm scared to even ask what something like might run for a 28'x14' pool.

Anyone have any suggestions for contractor's in the Denver area for this type of work?
 
Talk to a good mason who can carefully look at the way the deck and the waterline tile interface with the coping and bond beam.
