Does anybody make a skimmer basket that lasts?

I bought a Super Pro Generic Hayward B-152 Skimmer Basket last July and the handle just snapped. It was not being abused; moderate debris pulled out unremarkably. The handle is secured by these plastic pins that are the diameter of a matchstick. I've had genuine Haywards before, they snap too. So, I've worked out a ramshackle repair system using zip ties. Those last a few months and will eventually snap as well. Also, the basket doesn't seat perfectly with the zip ties on there.

This is a little ridiculous. Tell me there is an answer.

Val-Pak's replacement skimmer baskets are very good. The one I bought for my pool is significantly nicer than the OEM Pentair basket.

If that Super Pro Generic B-152 basket fit your skimmer, Val-Pak part number V60-555 will also fit: V60-555 – Val-Pak Hayward SP1082 & SP1084 Skimmer Basket – SPX1082CA – Val-Pak Products

Interesting, thanks. That does look like a plastic handle though. I want a metal handle like what JN has! This seems to be a case where the old stuff is made better than the new stuff. The new stuff sucks!

Or call up INYO Pools and give the make and model of your skimmer. I’m sure they can suggest a replacement that would work.

My skimmer basket (Hayward) with a metal bar to lift it is 10 years old and looks almost exactly the way it did when the pool was built … what is going on in your pool???
Same here. The bar is a little corroded, but the basket seems like-new. The bar slips into rectangular holes in the basket, so there is nothing to break. Doesn't have a brand on it though, so can't steer you to it.

It's a lot like this one, with the handle offset from the middle, so I can still get my hand in there if I need to, without removing the basket or the handle.

Considering my pool is all Pentair, this might very well be the one I have.

You're talking about the photo at the link I posted? Looks like a metal handle to me:

Personally, though, I wouldn't want a handle like that unless it were very easily removable. Hard to line the basket with a hairnet if the handle's fixed in place.

Is this your basket handle?
Hayward SPX1082N2 SP1075/SP1082 Skimmer Basket Handle

I usually have several spare handles in case the pins break on the handle on the basket.

I agree with DrewLG that I like being able to easily remove the handle to use hair nets or skimmer socks.

Are the baskets getting full of debris? Or do they get broken when vacuuming an sucking up a rock or something?

I have 9+ year old Hayward baskets with these handles installed on them. I also have a basket without a handle for when I vacuum. Even picking up bits of concrete from when I had the patio around the pool redo didn't break the baskets.

I'll trade you a handle-less one for it! :)

Maybe that is a metal handle, that one may be the frontrunner.

We seem to live in a world of fantasy and reality. In the fantasy version, we see science articles every day about super-material "breakthroughs". In reality, we can't manufacture a skimmer basket that lasts more than a few months.

It's not just skimmer baskets. Telescoping pool poles are a disgrace. I could start another thread, but I'd need to be able to disable the TFP profanity filter to clearly state my position.

It is a generic version of that. What a racket, selling the handles separately for 1000X the cost to manufacture them. These are engineered to fail all the way.

OK, not just me then.

Ah, so you must be quite a bit younger than me. I usually start such statements with "We can send a man to the moon, but..." ;)

I purchased these on Amazon and have had good experiences thus far. Agree that a hair net can only be attached if handle removed. The basket is also weighted at bottom.

That looks like the same one I bought in early 2018.

So far they are still like new.

The original Hayward baskets that came with the pool lasted about 14 years, albeit with a couple repairs.

Did I mention those weights break off on mine too? I shake the basket out in the yard and then have to go pick the weight out of the muck.
