I'm in the process of closing the pool, and bought this to add after shocking.

Just realised it is not Poly[oxyethylene(dimethyliminio)ethylene(dimethylimino)ethylene dichloride].

Polyquat doesn't appear to be widely available in the UK. I have a tensioned mesh winter cover over the pool. Should I bother with an algaecide, or return it to the shop?

I'd return it. If you've closed the pool per instructions found here you won't need it.
