I was attempting to vacuum to waste and thought by moving the valve to 'waste' I was doing so.

I'm confused. Based on posts I'm reading if I vacuum to waste I'm bypassing filter. Why/how did I loose DE powder if I didn't use filter? My filter is aix-positiion Vari-Flo Filter Control Valve. It's the Hayward Pro-Grid Vertical DE Filter Series, model DE4820.
