Worried and confused about bleach and shocking....

I have read and read for 4 or 5 days. I feel incredibly stupid. Everyone keeps asking everyone if they've read Pool School, etc. I have, and I'm still confused. I have never dealt with a pool ever.... I just want it to be safe and clear. Thanks!

Worried and confused about bleach and shocking....

My pool needs shocking. My test kit is on the way... It already has a a pretty strong chlorine smell. Won't adding all of this bleach make it worse? Will it be safe to swim in? I don't want to ruin all of our swim suits :?

    New pool....first test results

I am ordering the kit in the morning. I was wrong....it is a 3 qt container of bleach. Is it safe to go ahead and put in the rest of the alkalinity up? The drops are OTO.

    New pool....first test results

It is a gallon of CYA. I just realized that I have some Shock Plus so I guess I will use that? Do I need to have my SWG off while shocking? Filter on? Thanks for all your help!

    New pool....first test results

Yes, I know that. I had no choice but to have him test it today. I am returning the Hardness Plus since I haven't opened it. The alkalinity up wasn't even as expensive as the big bag of baking soda at Walmart, so I did ok on that one

    New pool....first test results

The Ph is somewhere close to the "ideal" range. The pink is the closest color to it than any of he others. The pool is a new fill. It isn't "crystal" clear, but it doesn't look bad either. It has a very slight green tint. I added probably a fourth of a bottle of CYA liquid stabilizer last...

The strips were also showing the CYA as low, but of course I don't know the numbers. I have I red drop test from Walmart. I will check it in a few.
