    Testing for Borate Concentrations

I had worried this was the case. I’ll probably work with the test strips and see if I can work out a spectrophotometric method. Thanks.

    Testing for Borate Concentrations

Thank you. I had figured I’d have to do something like this but I couldn’t figure out a suitable indicator dye. I’ve heard people kvetch about using rosocyanine. I’ll look in the literature and see if I can find anything. You’re probably right about having to dilute down. I’m in the somewhat odd...

    Testing for Borate Concentrations

Very interesting. I had read about the mannitol-borate complex but wasn’t sure if anyone had actually figured it out. I would order the borate alkalinity test you mentioned but I have to try to get an industrial proxy as I doubt they’d ship it to me. Unrelated to the thread subject but I don’t...

    Testing for Borate Concentrations

I am considering using borates in my pool but I have yet to find a test kit that meets the criteria for me. My favorite water tests are hands down drop titrations. I find them the most accurate and while I’ve thought about it I have yet to splurge on a colorimeter. I’d love to figure out how...

    Hi Everyone

Again, interesting. I question some of the points raised by the articles. Ozone: 1) Whilst pools may be hydraulically inefficient, it is untrue to say that there is no amount of cycles that will have all the water seen by the filter (et al). If we allow an infinite number of cycles, eventually...

    Hi Everyone

I believe the ozone creates a chlorate ion. I would imagine that something with such an extreme oxidation state would exert some degree of anti microbial effect (but I can’t find anything in the literature). The created chlorate ion would not show up in a DPD reagent test (DPD1 creates a red...

    Hi Everyone

I have never had issues with copper build up (and may have actually let the mineral cartridge lapse, now that I think about it). I test regularly so as to ward off staining. What is the issue with ozone? It has demonstrable anti-microbial effects (Antimicrobial activity of ozonated water -...

    Muriatic Acid vs Sodium Bisulfate

Interesting. I have an automatic level controller that adapts whenever there is rain. I couldn’t give you a figure about how much this equates to in a given year (I’d have to check rainful records and do some math). I’ll probably just stick with HCl as was recommended.

    Muriatic Acid vs Sodium Bisulfate

I do not plan on switching, which made that concern rather moot to me. I was more concerned about the various threats of increased corrosion.

    Hi Everyone

Interesting. I’ll look into procuring FAS-DPD reagent. Anything to give me more data. My pool runs an ozone system and mineralization cartridge (primarily copper and silver I believe?). I was told that this would lower my chlorine demand and allow me to run as low as 2 ppm. Is this true?

    Muriatic Acid vs Sodium Bisulfate

Organic and biochemistry (pharmaceuticals). Of course, there is overlap but it is not distinctly my area. I’d be more comfortable talking about the cytotoxins produced by algae than, say, the decomposition of various types of chlorine.

    Hi Everyone

I do have a testing kit and test religiously (probably more so than is necessary, actually) with the Taylor K-2005. I also have a pH and TDS meter (the pH meter I am dubious of). Thank you.

    Muriatic Acid vs Sodium Bisulfate

It’s mostly facetious. Something about the thought just makes me happy, which is why it was added as an addendum. I’ll continue using HCl (no matter how much it pains me ;).

    Muriatic Acid vs Sodium Bisulfate

I have been pondering switching from muriatic acid to sodium bisulfate for a while. I prefer the precision afforded by dry substances (weighing is easier for me than volumetric measurements) as well as the reduced difficulty of storage. The “safety factor” really means nothing to me. My main...

Upwards pH Drift Without Significant Aeration

Current measures: FC/TC: 2 pH: 8.0 TA: 80 CA: 300 TDS: 1200 (Calculated LSI: 0.24) Every week I have the same balancing issue. I go to test pool water and it has invariably drifted back up to somewhere around 8.0 (SD 0.2) (as measured by phenol red, meter occasionally reads higher but may need...
