    Mustard Nightmare

We do have 2 "bubbler" returns on the beach entry, so the water gets turned over quite vigorously in that area. My pool also gets blazing unobstructed sun for over over 8 hours/day this time of year, so maybe that will help cook those CCs.

    Mustard Nightmare

Thank you for that excellent insight!! In addition to having 3 children (9/7/4 years old), we have a 14 year old extremely geriatric German Shepherd. He has been a member of the family, but has sadly declined with age and become somewhat indiscriminate with his waste elimination (and is deaf...

    Mustard Nightmare

We've done that plenty. It just seems I fall behind to some degree with regard to making progress on the CC and OCLT when I let it fall to or below SLAM level. Luckily (if not frustratingly), the water has been crystal clear this entire time. You could read the date on a coin sitting on the...

    Mustard Nightmare

Update: no leak based on bucket test. As to why no SWG -- PB wouldn't warranty anything with a SWG due to corrosion issues he has experienced. I've considered installing one at some point. It should hopefully be plug and play in place of the chlorinator plumbing-wise. I stopped the SLAM...

    Mustard Nightmare

Good idea to check for a leak. I finally got a day to work on the pool -- no evidence for leak by bucket test. I think the reason for my CYA staying low, however, is that my overfill drain seems to be installed very low. The bottom of the drain sits directly at the midpoint of my tile border...

    Mustard Nightmare

My pool is 4 years old, and despite being a loyal TFP follower during this time (I've never used a "pool guy" or had water tested at a pool store) I believe I have been living with mustard algae pretty much since the pool opened. I've been bad about adding chlorine to the pool at night, testing...

Have your water checked for phosphates and nitrates

Nitrates are stable in the water and not further oxidized by chlorine, so it is impossible for nitrates themselves to increase chlorine demand. Ammonia can cause high chlorine demand, but that can eventually be satisfied with enough chlorine. That aside, I think the major issue here is that...

Experiencing my winter worst case scenario!

I'm in Longview. They have fortunately "upgraded" tonight's forecast to a low of 22. Thanks for the link. I kicked on the heater today to get the pool temp back up into the upper 40's (it had fallen as low as 37!). I get a ton of wind across my pool, so it probably cools off a bit faster...

Experiencing my winter worst case scenario!

Salvation!! The power came back on while I was reading the heater manual to find the drain plugs! There have still been a few ominous "flickers", but so far so good. The pumps are all firing away for the night. If the power company had just looked at my usage over the past 72 hours or so...

Experiencing my winter worst case scenario!

I've augmented my plan by partially redirecting the exhaust from my generator toward my heater. Luckily they are only about 6 feet apart. May not help a ton, but so far seems to be keeping the area around the heater approx. 3-4 degrees above ambient temp. I'm giving the power company until 9...

Experiencing my winter worst case scenario!

Here in North East Texas, we have finally gotten some of the winter weather the rest of the country has been experiencing. It's fun playing in the snow! However, now the power is out so no freeze protection for the pool... I have a generator for the house, but not enough juice to run the...

Need help with outdoor pool lighting

My PB used Hayward LED color accent lights for my deck lights. They are integrated/networked with the pool lights so you can have light colors that coordinate with your pool. The wiring would ultimately have to go back to a transformer near your equipment pad. May not be an option you want to...

White scaling on my new waterfall & disagreement amount chemical levels

My thoughts: So what if your TA is 160. I plugged your numbers into PoolMath - your CSI is still -0.19 vs -0.59 with TA 70 (assuming 50 degree water - but still only 0.09 with 80 degree water!). Yes, higher TA leads to higher CSI which can lead to scaling, BUT - your TA would have to be off...

    Leave Cleaner in Pool

I only take mine out when multiple people/kids will be swimming. I like it to run for an hour every day - I tend to be pretty picky about the bottom of the pool being clean. I've been through 1 year so far with no issues... Polaris 280.

    Jets not working

Agree with capacitor. This is becoming a more common issue with A/C compressors as well. The A/C technician this past summer (when mine quit) told me that all manufacturers have outsourced to foreign production and there is no such thing as a "quality" capacitor available any more. Hopefully...
