After removing the sand and the laterals I found that when the assembly was put together at the factory they stripped out one of the screws. I shot a photo of the stripped out screw and will see if Hayward will warranty it.

I found the issue, a lateral came loose, now to empty the sand and put it back together.

Re: Leak - possibly spider gasket... This is one time to go to Leslie's, take the valve top into the store and they will put the new spring on for you. I don't remember what the spring costs but it couldn't have been too high or I would have remembered.
