pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

OK, thanks! You guys are fabulous!! very very reassuring to those of us suffering pool-anxiety!

pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

is it bad to go too low on the TA? i guess i'll be adding it back with the borax soon enough, just don't want to do badness to the liner, pump, filter, or plumbing in the meantime...

pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

OK, another question then.... Is there a point where one can't raise the pH with aeration? i.e. is there a lower limit to dropping the TA? I managed to get the TA down to 80, and the pH was at 7.2, so i kept aerating, and now the TA is 70 and the pH just won't budge above 7.2 after aerating...

pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

thank you for that clarification! i guess that was obvious to everyone, but understanding the henderson-hasselbach equation was alway my weak area in chemistry! in fact, i always preferred O-chem to general chemistry!! i guess i hadn't realized the usefulness of active aeration!! and i'm...

pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

excellent - thanks! i've obviously been over-aerating - my neighbors will be happy to have me turn off the fountain overnight!! i'll get right on it...and, i'm happy to realize that with aeration, i won't have to add baking soda to bring the pH back up to 7.5 before getting to the borate/acid...

pH, TA, and aerarion. (Was: Can I predict how much acid...)

I'm attempting to follow step 1 of waterbear's fabulous how-to on adding borates to pool, but I cannot get the TA down to the target range of 70-80. I did drop initially from about 140 down to 120, but i'm stuck there. It took me a day to realize that I had to add more acid to "fuel" the...

Chlorine vanishing? can't reach shock levels...

well, strange piscean or no - woohoo!!! :o after my fourth addition of 6 gallons of 6% chlorine, i seem to have finally got the FC level holding at somewhere between 15 and 20ppm!!! patience is everything. thanks for alleviating my worries, yet again. will be checking again, of course, in...

Chlorine vanishing? can't reach shock levels...

like i said, i grew up in Calif - everyone has to know what body part their sign is associated with!! and i'm definitely mutable!!

Chlorine vanishing? can't reach shock levels...

first, i guess - feb 23! although i grew up in Calif, i never got that into astrology, but i have always felt an affinity for water!! and feet!!

Chlorine vanishing? can't reach shock levels...

thanks JasonLion and waterbear for the reassurance. JasonLion's write up on clearing algae is great!! i had seen it before, and it does imply that there'll be a lot of additional chlorine - i was just a bit surprised by how much i was adding. it means a stop at costco for me tomorrow!!

Chlorine vanishing? can't reach shock levels...

Quick question: does killing algae "consume" chlorine? I'm trying to get my newly opened pool up to shock level, and, after adding the recommended volume based on the pool calculator 3 times total, in the last few hours, my FC reading is still 1! Yes, the water is brownish, the first cycle of...

Thanks all for giving me courage!!

I am like several other folks who have posted here recently. We bought a house with a pool (vinyl liner, 18,000 gal, one skimmer/one return, with a sand filter), but no manuals or instructions. The previous owner told me it was a piece of cake to maintain, but without any directions, I felt...

Fastlane installation in a vinyl pool?

has anyone installed a Fastlane unit (made by Endless pools) into an existing vinyl-lined pool? friend's of ours have the endless pool, and love it - i'm just wondering about installing this unit into an existing (somewhat small) pool. the whole point, of course, is that 10yds length means a...

just want to check my numbers...

thanks to all of you for reassuring me. it seems like the FC is holding fine at the moment, so i think i'll just sit tight, monitor daily for the next bit and see what happens. the early part of the summer, when the water was crystal clear, and i hadn't yet experienced the mustard algae bloom...

just want to check my numbers...

so, what is a "better" TA range?? most of my sources seem to suggest 80-120, and 140 doesn't seem too far off that. am i better off with a value nearer 80?
