Minor but confusing pool chemistry issue.

Yes, I've added Borates the past two years and typically both the pH and TA spikes when I add them (and it's expected... even though the product is advertised as pH neutral). And yes I've been using the Supreme "Plus" edition of the product each time. I normally take pool completely down every...

Minor but confusing pool chemistry issue.

This season it seems like my pool is trending a bit lower on the pH side, I'm not too sure what's up or if it's worth worrying about/reacting to. I think it may have been due to a big downpour we received shortly after I opened my pool, but after my stabilizer was added and CYA was...

TFP Conventional Wisdom vs. The Cleanest Pool I've Ever Been In

Well, I did upgrade to a higher-end sand filter instead of using the cartridge filter that came with the pool... I think it can cycle the water fast enough, but I think you've definitely hit the nail on the head with regard to circulation. His pool has a floor drain and a side skimmer, mine...

TFP Conventional Wisdom vs. The Cleanest Pool I've Ever Been In

Oh, I should also mention... I run my filter pump nearly 24x7. The only time I do not run it is if my FC levels are above 4 ppm and I haven't added any chemicals, then I'll usually turn it off overnight and fire it back up the following afternoon, but that is pretty rare. He's telling me I'm...

TFP Conventional Wisdom vs. The Cleanest Pool I've Ever Been In

I've been maintaining my pool, which is just a 15' round Intex metal frame ABG with a sand filter, for several years exclusively going by knowledge that is promoted on this site and I've had varying degrees of success -- that is, I use liquid (12.5%) bleach to maintain FC @ around 4ppm with...

Ugh, I think I screwed-up my pool start-up... High pH?

That's if you're using an SWG, no? This links say 100 "if you're using tricholor" (I was using dichlor, but now I am just going to use bleach) http://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/4655-So-you-want-to-add-borates-to-your-pool-Why-and-How Anyway, I'm not entirely worried about the borates...

Ugh, I think I screwed-up my pool start-up... High pH?

For adding Borates, it's recommended to be 100-110 apparently. So I tested again today, good news is, pH is back down to 7.4. However, the bad news is, the FC is pretty much gone -- literally 0-0.5, and my TA is back down to 80-85ish. :( So for now I am just going to add 16 oz. of stabilizer...

Ugh, I think I screwed-up my pool start-up... High pH?

Thanks for the quick replies. Wasn't aware of that for the TA reagent, I'll keep that in mind. Same with the effects section, although I had been using "www.poolcalculator.com" not "www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html" -- is there a difference? I know I haven't OD'd on CYA, but I would like to...

Ugh, I think I screwed-up my pool start-up... High pH?

Well, I'm not quite sure where I went wrong... but I'm pretty sure Intex is lying about the volume of my 15' x 48" metal frame pool ... the manual and online docs say 4,440 gal. but I definitely screwed something up and hopefully someone here can help me figure out what so I can get things...

    Sand Filter Tank Storage Question

Hello, I recently took down my AG pool and am in the process of storing everything based on tips found here, but I couldn't find anything that specifically answers this question... this is my first year using a sand filter (14" Intex). I live in SE Michigan where we have very cold winters, and...

    Got a problem...

Haven't considered adding DE... tough to find it locally in < 25lb packs. But I am alright with continuing to shock and run the filter for a little while longer -- I just want to be able to swim on days like today. The main issue is that I don't really know how much CYA I have right now, and...

    Got a problem...

Update: Good news! Been shocking by maintaining 10-12 PPM FC 2x per day and it's working great. I removed the CYA sock for now (will test CYA next week). The water is much less cloudy and is back to being clear in color. Less yellow stuff accumulating on the bottom as well (been brushing it...

    Got a problem...

This is the link to the exact pool I have: http://www.intexcorp.com/index.php/home ... 945eb.html 4,440 gal assumes 90% full apparently. seems about right. Recently there has been quite a bit of rain/rain water, and I did a fairly good backwash but only once since starting the pool @...

    Got a problem...

Wow guys, thanks for the quick reponses... sorry about that, my sig & location have been updated. I use a Taylor FAS-DPD kit; thanks for the links to the enhanced instructions on the CYA readings, that's basically what I've been doing. It is still somewhat cloudy, but was definitely below 30...

    Got a problem...

So this is the 2nd year I've had an above ground vinyl 15' x 48" Intex pool (4440 Gal.), the first year I was able to maintain decent FC levels from the get-go by starting it with just bleach then occasionally adding some dichlor. This year... different story. After opening it, I struggled a...
