Is something else making my pool green?

Unfortunately test kits that measure above 3ppm FC aren't available in my country, been meaning to import one. pH: 7.4 TA: 60 CYA: 40 After running the filter continuously and dumping in even more chlorine, it's looking much better. "The dirt killed your FC, algae entered the pool and grew"...

Is something else making my pool green?

We had some flooding and my pool overflowed into the garden. A lot of mud ended up in the pool. The water has gone a greeny brown colour. There was already a reasonable amount of chlorine in the water (I had cleaned the filter and added chlorine earlier in the day) and then added a lot more...

Best time to run filter, day or night?

Something I didn't see mentioned here was chlorine effectiveness. You'll generally want to run your pump when adding chemicals for even dispersement. UV breaks down chlorine so it makes sense to add it at night when it will be more effective, and therefore you'll probably want to run your pump...

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

Ah ok, thanks for clearing that up

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

While reading up on chlorine and CYA, I came across this article which suggests a chlorine level of 7.5% of CYA: New Thinking: Chlorine/Cyanuric Acid In Balance - AQUA Magazine So at 30ppm CYA, you get 2.25ppm FC. This is quite a bit lower than the 4-6ppm recommended by the Cl/CYA chart here...

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

Yup, it does. I've just added some actually. Based on the guidelines on the packaging, I estimate the the CYA to be around 30ppm now. I've used trichlor in the past, but ended up having too much CYA in the water.

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

I do, but it only measures chlorine up to 3ppm, and no stabilizer or calcium :/ I need to inquire at my local pool shop, but I might have to import one.

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

I live in South Africa :) I've been looking at bleach at my local grocery stores but they're all 3%. I'm yet to look at our local equivalent to Walmart, as it's a bit of a drive, but looking at their website there are some brands I haven't seen before, so some might be stronger. I've got a...

    Bleach vs Calcium Hypoclorite

I'm trying to calculate if it's cheaper to buy household bleach (sodium hypochlorite) or granular calcium hypochlorite. The bleach is only 3% concentration (I haven't been able to find liquid chlorine in my area). I calculated that 200g of calcium hypochlorite is equivalent to about 375ml of...

    Chlorine Turning Water Green

Maybe that was a naive thing for me to say :D I think I put too much trust in pool product manufacturers. I've read lots of advice online, on this site and others, but I'll have another read through those articles! The thing is, I'm still getting algae growth - not a lot, just a thin film...

    Chlorine Turning Water Green

Clear green! Mmm, I can test pH, total alkalinity, acid demand, and chlorine (i think free chlorine)

    Chlorine Turning Water Green

Hi! I've googled this and it seems that the chlorine (calcium hypochlorite) is oxidizing the copper in the water, turning it green. The only suggestions I've come across is to use metal remover to remove the copper, but I've added copper sulphate to keep the algae under control (works amazingly...

Flow rate decreases within a few minutes

It's the one thing I haven't checked as i replaced the sand about 6 months ago. Will open it up and have a look. Maybe its a combination of too much debris and an old pump. No idea about the pressure - the gauge has been broken.. in fact i don't recall it ever working. You can definately feel...

Flow rate decreases within a few minutes

Short Story Turn on pump without pool cleaner - runs fine Turn on pump with pool cleaner (automatic (HugBug) or manual) - water flow slows down after a few minutes, to less than a quarter Unplug pool cleaner while pump is still running - water flow remains slow Switch off pump for a few seconds...

    Elbow joint replacement

Well it seemed to have worked. No more bubbles coming from the outlet. For anyone that has ever worked with silicone you'll know that it gets onto everything and doesn't come off easily. So I highly recommend wearing latex gloves for this procedure. I didn't, and it of course got everywhere -...
