When is it safe to open a pool?

We don't usually open the pool until the end of March, or even early April. However, we're putting the house on the market in a couple weeks, and the pool is currently an unattractive murky green swamp. I'd like to open it early and get it looking clear, even though it'll be waaaaay to cold to...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

Here's the current list of readings. Still losing chlorine at night. Once I do get the chlorine level stable, at, say at FC16 or so, isn't that much too high a level for safe swimming? What happens next? Do we just wait it out and wait for the chlorine level to drop down on its own? Day One...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

Overnight FC - how does this sound? Still working on this shock process (first time trying the BBB shock methods...) How does this sound? Aiming for 20+ FC, based on a 55 CYA. 5 pm - FC 22 (added 182oz bleach to help levels not drop too much overnight) 5:30pm - FC 27, CC 0 6:30 am - FC 13...

    Shock process ruining liner????

Maybe our pool has an atypical liner installation. The spots are perfect circles, evenly spaced along the edges of the liner. I would expect more random patchiness from metals in the pool water.

    Shock process ruining liner????

I'm in the process of shocking our pool using the BBB methods. This morning I was doing the prescribed brushing, and I'm noticing quite a few spots that don't brush up. They look exactly like a rusted nail head. Some in clusters, some along an obvious seam. Could it be that the vinyl liner is...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

Am I doing this shock correctly? Ya'll advised me a couple days ago that my pool needed to be shocked. (It isn't holding chlorine, despite being very clear.) So, I began the process today. Below is a list of what I've done so far. Is it correct? CYA is 55, so I'm aiming for a FC reading of...

Going out of town...how do we prevent a swamp??

The pool was here when we moved in...no way we would have ever had the cash to install...

Going out of town...how do we prevent a swamp??

Tell me more about a timer, please? My dad - think "handyman" - looked into it for me, and thought we'd need something pretty high tech because of the voltage of the power coming to the pump...or something like that. It was going to cost a pretty penny to do a timer. The cheapest he could find...

Going out of town...how do we prevent a swamp??

Actually, my CYA is high (70), which means doing this shock is a pain. Thankfully we're on a well, so doing a water change is less of a big deal.

Going out of town...how do we prevent a swamp??

Chlorine management has been mostly manual this season; we're new to the BBB method, trying to figure out how to do things. We filled up the chlorine feeder once when we opened the pool, but the tablets didn't dissolve as much as expected. I wasn't too concerned about it since we were planning...

Going out of town...how do we prevent a swamp??

We need to be gone for a month - how do we manage the pool while we're gone? We have no timer on our pump - there is a chlorine feeder, but not sure if it works properly. We could get a family member to come over every couple days and do simple tasks, but the whole daily testing & maintenance...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

The pool Chlorine/CYA chart says shock level is 28 for a CYA of 70. Should I try to reduce my CYA before shocking the pool?? That is an enormous amount of chlorine!! The Pool Calculator says 11+ gallons...and at the rate this pool loses chlorine, seems like it would take a boatload more to...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

One thing I didn't add....because the pool was eating chlorine so fast, because the water has been clear, and because we weren't using it much (it has been at 64 degrees or so....) I've only been adding it chlorine a couple times a week. When I do add it, it quickly disappears... I don't know...

Pool eats chlorine - can't keep chlorine in pool.

We've been trying to use the BBB method this year, and I'm having some trouble with maintaining any chlorine in the pool. I put a large jug of chlorine (1.5 gal, I think) in this morning, which usually raises the level to about 4. It's 2:00 on a hazy, not particularly bright day, and the...
