Last year I used a piece of carpet (as was mentioned above) under our 18' x 52" intex pool. Worked Great! No smell either BTW- but it is a synthetic type carpet. The trick is, carpet is usually 12' wide...since I didn't have enough to piece around it then, I used some foam type underlayment...
