So I performed the cleaning as suggested, and have been adding bleach daily, the only measure I have is test strips currently, but they are whiting out (they read up to 10ppm), so its at a good level I reckon... The pool is slowly clearing, however, its definitely clearer if I leave the pump...

I can't touch the installation itself until the house transfers into my name, so the leaves will come out and a cover installed, but the wiring has to stay as is for a while. Freaks me out as well Yeah it's our lapa area, I'll take proper pics when I've cleaned it up a little :) it's huge...
