Not sure what the issue would be. I worked hydraulics in the military and that half inch down and back up after the cell, will do nothing to the flow. Minor increase over the cell plates and back to normal past it.

In some cases, more than less, they install the fittings so close that there is nothing left to attach a coupling to. Just adding that there are fittings that allow those close repairs.

I wish I could attach a photo from my phone of the connector I used to fix the same issue on my plumbing. Check with a pool store. The unions are about 10 bucks.
