Starting the Algae Battle (Again)

Looking good. Few more days to go - you got a 3ppm drop in 3 hours , so plenty being munched up. You will see it drop each day, and get a pretty good feel for when you are close to passing overnight test.

The reagent is a killer, I ended up buying a 24oz refill bottle on Amazon, which was good value. I test pool every day, so comes in handy for everyday use too.

Sorry haven't been keeping the updates flowing! Had a family event to attend to yesterday. Chlorine levels have been kept between 12-16ppm between yesterday and today.

Test results for yesterday and today:

8/23

Test 1- 8:30am (31 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 15.5

Test 2- 8pm (24 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 12ppm

8/24

Test 1- 7:30am (32 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 16ppm
CC- 1ppm (2drops)

I put the Polaris vacuum in yesterday and it was pulling a lot of gunk that we apparently missed in the deep end. I ran out of r-0871 as of this morning and my replacement reagents should ship in today. Since I'm back to work this week, testing will probably be once a day now and I will continue to try and keep chlorine fairly high and let the filter clean up the cloudy water.

The pool is looking great, keep up the good job.

Since you're out of reagents I'd recommend just continue to hit it with the approx. amount of chlorine that you have been (say if you've been adding a gallon daily add a gallon now (and daily), and then since you've got to work, also add like a 1/2 gallon-gallon extra (depending on how much you've been dropping during the day), to hold you through the non check times, then you can readjust your levels when your reagents arrive. That way you'll be certain you don't drop below SLAM/SHOCK levels while you're unable to test. I hope this helps. Have a wonderful day.

As long as you compensate as exampled above in comment #86, for the sun burning through the chlorine, ect. while away in order to ensure you remain at, or slightly above the SLAM/Shock level it will be fine. I'm looking forward to see the progress. Keep up the great job, and have a wonderful night :)

My 2oz 0871 reagent came in on Monday and I'm back in business as of Tuesday! Planning to get in tomorrow after work! I've decided to lower and maintain FC at around 14ppm until things clear up and so that I can more safely swim :). It's been a crazy hectic week and I'm doing my best to keep up with the pool! I'm planning to do one more round of manual vacuuming Friday and then let the Polaris handle it all. Today when I cleaned the bag it was only about half full compared to totally full after yesterday's cleaning. More updates to come tomorrow.

Looking good Jason. The blue in the top pic with the sun shining on it looks beautiful.

Keep up the great job, and yes, bump up that number a little as Kim suggested to keep from dropping below your Shock level while away.

Whooo hooo!! I'm so excited for you. Your grandma and grandpa-(up above), I'm sure are both very proud of you. Keep on, keeping on, and have a wonderful day. :)

UPDATE: So things have been going pretty great with the pool over the last 9 days! I've been over daily, now scooping more and more leaves that fall and maintaining the chemicals. Out hard cover should be in hopefully in another week or so. We've been using quite a bit of liquid chlorine but we're also not using a supplement (trichlor or dichlor). A few days ago I decided to lower the maintained FC level to 8ppm. Pool math recommends between 3-7ppm so I figure it's good to keep it a little on the high side. The pool is crystal clear as of maybe 4 or five days ago. I can clearly see the drain in the deep end and everything looks awesome. I did have some random debris build up that I vacuumed out to waste yesterday.

I did want to add an important note- maybe closer to a week and a half ago when I swam in the pool, when I got out I became extremely itchy. FC was in a safe level and PH was fine but TA was low (around 40ppm). After some research it appeared that low TA was causing my problem. Now I knew that it was important to raise it but I just hadn't gotten there yet, my primary concern at the time was maintaining a relatively high FC level. Anyways..... I raised the FC level up to 100ppm And no more problems :).

SO- today we are having the family over and having what could be one last pool party :). I'm so excited for all the family to come over and see the pool again. We're going on almost three weeks of a non-green pool and it's just awesome to me. I'd like to thank all the folks for the kind words and for all of the very helpful information provided to me. Here is the data I've recorded over the last 8-9 days.

8/27

Test 1- 6pm (12 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 6ppm
TA- 60ppm
PH- 7.3
Note: Adding Chlorine to raise FC to 14ppm
Adding Soda Ash to raise PH and TA

8/28

Test 1- 1:20pm (17 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 8.5ppm
TA- 70ppm
PH- 7.6

8/29

No testing

8/30

Test 1- 3:30pm (6 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 3ppm
TA- 100ppm

9/1

6PM- (8 drops) (10ml) x.5
FC- 4ppm
TA- 100ppm
PH- 7.6
Note: raising pool 1inch. Adding cl to raise to 8ppm. Pool just about crystal. Back washed filter.

9/2
FC- 3.5ppm
CC- .5ppm
Note: pool doesn't seem like it can get much clearer, looking awesome. Adding chlorine to raise to 8ppm.

9/3
FC-5ppm

PH- 7.5
Note: not adding chlorine.

9/4 38 drops 25ml x.2

Interesting, that's the first I've heard of low TA causing itchy skin. What was the pH when your TA was 40ppm? How high were the CC's?

Do you have a link to that information on low TA causes skin irritation? (I find this stuff interesting to read).

I hope you meant TA when you said "I raised the FC level up to 100ppm And no more problems" LOL

Regardless, that pool looks great. What is your current CYA?

Thanks Dom!! And LOL yeah I meant TA. Here's one of several links I came across indicating low TA can cause skin irritation. It was enough for me to go on lol. TA was the only answer to my puzzle, regardless. I couldn't think of any other reasons. I believe PH was somewhere around 7.3-7.5. FC was probably around 10 or so. I tested CYA a few days ago and it looked to be just under 40ppm.
