Also, when I went into the pool calculator, it says to add only 6 bottles to get the levels from 3.2 to 16. Is that all I would need? My pool looks like it could use about 60 bottles at this point! lol

When you first start your SLAM you add the chlorine and then retest in an hour and add more to bring the FC back up to shock level. Repeat as often as possible - test, calculate, add. You want to keep your chlorine level at shock level as much as possible.

So I put in 3 bottles of the liquid chlorine. The pool calculator said 3, not 6 like I originally thought. I tested the free chlorine this afternoon and it read 14.4 but the pool calculator is telling me I don't have to add any more bottles in but the pool is still the same color as it has been. Just ran all the tests again and these are the numbers it recorded:

Free chlorine-8.5/combined chlorine-1.0
pH-7.6
TA-190
Calcium Hardness-400ppm
CYA-30

What should I add next? thanks!

ok the pool calc is working for me again. It told me to add 2 more gallons of liquid chlorine, so I did. I will test the water in an hour and see what the new results are.

First, your measurement of 14.4 indicates that you are using 25ml of sample water to do the test. Use only 10ml and multiply the number of drops by .5 to get your results. This will save you reagents. Maybe you already made this change since the latest result is 8.5.

When using Pool Math ( http://www.troublefreepool.com/calc.html ) enter the test result in the left column (Now) and in the right column enter the target (16?). Unless the numbers are the same Pool Math will give you an amount to add. Make sure to enter your pool volume and bleach percentage also. If you haven't see this, it may help:
Pool School - PoolMath

Since you have started the SLAM the only test you need to run every time is FC. You can test CC once in a while too. The other tests you do not need to do right now.

Every time you test, enter the numbers (Now and Target) into Pool Math and add the amount indicated. So if your FC is 8.5 put that in the left column and your target in the right column to see how much you should add now. That's what you should add next.

Repeat this process as often as once every hour in the beginning.

Hopefully you have removed any tabs that were in the pool. During the SLAM the pump should be running 24/7. Keep an eye on the filter and backwash whenever the pressure rises by 25% over clean pressure. Brush the pool a lot since algae forms a biofilm and brushing breaks that up and exposes the algae to the chlorine. Reading through the directions for the SLAM can be helpful as it makes more sense once you start doing it.
Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain

Also, could you please fill in your signature as Texas Splash asked and explained in Post #2 of the thread? It is really helpful and makes it easier for people to respond to your questions.

Are you sure the pool is actually 30,500 gallons? That is really large for an above ground pool and if that number is bigger than it should be then the amount of chlorine calculated using Pool Math will be more than what you should be using if the pool is indeed smaller. If you add pool details in your signature someone can help double check the pool volume.

One more thing - take pictures :) It would be great if you would post a picture of what the water looks like now. But even if you don't post it, pics can help you see the progress. Take pictures in the same spot, looking down at the steps is a good place.

Update: Glad Pool Math is working for you now.

Yes, I started doing the 10ml now. Makes more sense. I will update the signature and take a pic in the morning since it's too dark right now for a pic. Yeah, the pool is huge...about 31,000 gallons of water. Seemed like a good idea 15 years ago. now, it's pretty big for one person to use it! :/. Will post the results in about 45 min. Hoping the numbers look better by then! Thanks for the advice!

Good to hear you're doing 10ml now.

Looking forward to seeing the pic of that huge pool :) One person!?, I think one person could just about get lost in it ;-)

You're welcome, glad it was helpful.

Yeah, pretty close! I haven't swam in it all year and last year had a week where it looked cloudy but blue-ish. this year I'm hoping to get 3-4 weeks. it's such a waste by the time it gets clear up here in the northeast!

Sorry to hear you haven't swam all year. This summer has been so much better for swimming than the last few. Hopefully your SLAM goes quickly.

FC reading 13. Adding another gallon, according to pool calc. CC is still at 1, though.

I've seen a lot of threads with pools loosing FC faster than yours so that's good. The CC's are from the chlorine doing its job killing stuff so don't fret it too much right now. Just keep doing what you're doing with testing and adding/dosing. Do squeeze in some sleep so you have energy for brushing tomorrow. LOL

I'll check tomorrow (well, I guess later today at this point) and see if you've posted updates.

Fc at 13. Will add another bottle and see what happens!

Good to hear. The more often you get FC back up to shock level the faster the process will go. It takes patience and persistence but it does work.

Now that you have daylight it's time to brush.:stirpot:

Have you checked the filter pressure? Pool School has a page on filter maintenance. I picked up some tips when I first read it so it might be helpful to you too:
Pool School - Maintenance and Cleaning of Pool Filters

Don't forget to brush, brush brush. All around, under stairs if you have them, all around skimmers and returns. And the wall and floor too! Anything that in the pool that can be should be removed and cleaned. Make sure there is nothing hiding on the bottom like leaves and gunk. Everything you can get out manually will make the SLAM go that much faster.

From personal experience, if you have not already done so, order more 0871, and you might want more 0870 too.

I ran out after figuring out none of the local pool stores carried it, and had to order it. I have gone through about 1.5 oz of 871 and am not done yet. When I reordered, I ordered a 16 oz bottle of 0871.

Yes, but started with a .75 oz bottle and was shocking to 26PPM. Does not take long to go through .75 oz when you are testing every hour or two and each test uses 40+ drops.

OP here started with a larger water sample, so has already used a lot of 871.
