Ongoing cloudy pool

Again you are one step ahead of me! Good job!

Bleach and time= a clear pool. I wish I could get you are time machine!

Kim

Ok will vacuum to recirculate. Thought that I could clear it sooner by going to waste. Where do you buy 12% bleach? I can't find it anywhere. I guess I could put triclo in skimmer basket too.. I will try to keep using bleach bit super hard to keep up shock level.

No to the trichlor, stick with liquids.

I have a hunch...SLAMMING requires, where possible, 24/7 filtering...its not exactly the chlorine that makes it clear...its the filtering.

When you wrote this, did you mean you're NOT filtering 24/7?
Also, turning pool over twice a day to ensure adequate but hopefully not too much filtration

- just to be cleaear, there is absolutely no such thing as "too much filtration" - especially during a slam ;)

Secondly, Cal hypo in and of itself is going to add particulate if you're already saturated in Calcium, I suspect.

SO -- run your fiter 24/7, backwash at 25% above clean pressure, use regular bleach (not splashless, it will foam) for a day or two and post up comparison pics so we can see the water. Do an OCLT tonight to see if youre losing much -- your daytime numbers don't necessarily mean much due to sun and cya level question.

Seems to me its time to finish up this slam, so I'm sending ya the mojo ;) cheers to clear!

Thanks for the MOJO!! Ok - have been filtering 24x7. Turning water over 2 times per 24 hrs. Have been back washing like crazy.. Have been using bleach for last 2 days.. Will take pics tomorrow morning.. Just added 1 gallon of bleach because FC was 13.5 and I'm shooting for FC15. Will do an OCLT and post results in the AM. Thanks all for the support! Now I just need to get this finished!!

NEWS FLASH.......
First time in 2015 I can make out the main drain at 9ft!!! Pool looks so good. It's not all of the way there yet but now I can see progress!!! Added bleach last night at 6:30 to aim for FC of 15. Got home at 9:30 and checked it was at 12.5 so based on pool calculator I added 1 121oz bleach. Checked it again at 10:30 and it was the same reading (was tired so I should have taken another sample but instead added another gallon of Bleach). So this morning the FC was 17. I am keeping this up so I can run the OCLT tonight. My pics don't turn out well because my pool is black bottom and it just looks dark (I bought the house with the pool I would have chosen Caribbean colors). Question - my next goal once this is clear is to add Borates through Borax and Muraictic acid. When could I do that?
Thanks for the MOJO and help!!!

Hi Pfisher, Welcome !
Your in good hands, these folks know what they're talking about. I know it feels like overload at first, reading everything that's on here. But you'll find (at least I did) that going back over some of the things that pertain to what your doing, you'll find you remember it without looking. Heck, I can even test FC, CC, & TA without calling up the extended tests post now

Posting pictures will help them "see" the condition of your water. They can spot where you're at in the slam process. Don't jump the gun on doing the OCLT until your water is clear (your not done yet). If you want to do it for practice, that's okay.

I'm not the pro here, but I agree, I think the Cal-Hypo is causing the white stuff. Like they have stated, bleach or liquid chlorine is the way to go. For me, Walmart Great value bleach at 8.25% is the cheapest route for me. (Plus I got a good workout lugging all the jugs around);)

As far as the Borates, put that on hold for a couple of weeks till you're thru slamming and levels have dropped down, so you can test everything and get levels where you want them before starting that.
Having said that, I just finished adding Borates to my pool and plan on posting about it. In a nutshell, I'm amazed at the difference in my water, BUT first things first, Slam, brush, filter, etc. etc.....:)

Discount stores like Big Lots may have higher concentrations of liquid chlorine. I buy cases of 12.5% NaCIO gallon jugs (true 128 oz. gallons) for $11.96 or $2.99/bottle at Ocean State Job Lot. Ocean State is only in the Northeast, but I have to believe that similar stores exist in Tennessee as well.

Thanks All... I'm still slamming but I feel so much better now that I see progress..! I will start shopping the discount stores for Bleach.. Never heard of Ocean State but I think we have Big Lots. I literally am crushing about 40 jugs of bleach bottles for the recycle bin now ... I am looking forward the Borate stage. Everyone seems to love the outcome.. Once I get thru slamming do you recommend CYA of 50? If not I think I will burn thru the bleach...

Ocean State Job Lot only goes so far south as New Jersey. They are only located in the Northeast (6 New England states, New York and New Jersey, IIRC). Sometimes you get what you pay for there, but not in terms of liquid chlorine. It's the best deal I can find. My Baquacil conversion took about 10 days and 11.5 cases of bleach, but my water has never looked clearer. You literally cannot go wrong with the advice on this website when it come to your pool. The moderators and experts know what they are talking about.

If there is no CYA reading, and unless you have a Salt water generator, I'd aim for 30 CYA. It doesn't degrade with time or sun intensity, so the higher the initial level, the more chlorine you'll need. As an aside, my father claimed he had "Chlorine lock" last year. So he added more and more chlorine to "break" it. From the knowledge I've gained here, he most likely had an elevated CYA reading and in retrospect, he should have done a partial water dump/refill to dilute the CYA. Next time I go home, I'm going to test his pool with my TF-100 kit. Let's see if the rookie can teach something to the Old Man w/ 40 years of residential pool experience (All due respect intended of course).

Chris order it for him and send him an email about it. In the email give him the link to TFP and tell him we will be waiting for him! LOL Tell him does not just get a test kit, he gets a whole bunch of crazy people to help him!

LOL, Kim. That's just crazy enough...it just might work...:)

Back to the issue at hand:

This is a good question. I put 5 lbs. of CYA in a (couple of) sock(s) in my skimmer last night, which should get me to a 30 ppm level. Realizing that this is the bare minimum recommended, what is the criteria to go higher or lower on the CYA front?

Re cya level, once finished slam why not try 40 to leave yourself room for pucks on vacation, etc?

Re borates...wait til you're done and settled. I use borc acid from Duda Diesel...don't need crazy amounts of MA that wa. Here's a link boric | Duda Diesel Alternative Energy, Chemicals & Industrial Supply Store

Excited that you've turned the corner on clear...keep it up and up you'll be floating in no time ;)

Swamp woman - just had a chance to check out Duda diesel boric acid.... I have already purchased the 20mule team in anticipation of adding borates( sounds like the advantage of buying pure Borax is that you don't need the acid to keep PH in check ?). Any insight would be appreciated. Ps. Pool is looking better and better as the days go by...!
