TFPC is Actually Kind of Boring...

I was at the local hardware store last weekend picking up 2 jugs of Muriatic Acid (for borate addition). As I was checking out, the lady said "You have your work cut out for you today". I said "No, not really, I'm getting this for my pool". The lady behind me in the line said "You're putting that in your pool?" I said yes, and she asked what for and I told her it lowers pH. She said she would never put that stuff in her pool. So I began to explain to her exactly what I was doing, and before long I had an audience of 5. 3 of them had green pools. I told them how easy and cheap it is using our methods here. A couple of them seemed very interested. They took out their phones and noted the TFP website address. I gave a couple of them my cell number one called that very evening. All he wanted was confirmation that it works. As it happens, he has a 6 year old daughter as do I. I told him to drop up for a visit. So yesterday evening there's a knock at my door and it's the guy from the hardware store with his 6-year old. Our daughters swam for an hour, and he said he had never seen water as clear as mine. We talked about TFP over a beer and my tablet. I showed him Pool Math, Pool School, and "all" my chemicals: Borax, baking soda, stabilizer, and MA (no bleach as I have SWG). I told him that apart from the optional borax addition, I have spent about 40 bucks on my pool this year. He couldn't believe it He's converted. I am betting that there are 3 or 4 of them that have visited this site. Good to see that there will be at least a couple of more happy pool owners.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I did some testing as well while he was here, and explained the CYA/Chlorine relationship. He was impressed (not with me, but with the testing, and information on the website). Numbers dead on. Convinced him that he has to have a TF-100 - he will be getting one. Of course he was a little intimidated. I told him he's better off than when I started because I had to stumble across the site on my own, and learn it all with no one to explain what I was reading (other than the good members here). So he has a good start!

GreatCanadian, that sounds like something I would do. :goodjob:

I worked yesterday but the hubby and The Man Child had people over for a pool day. Evidently, someone decided to change the direction of the pool return downward. The surface was clear as glass. *I* didn't know this so as I'm looking from the kitchen window, I see NOTHING in my pool!!! Ran outside to find the pool completely full and fine. The TFP water just so amazing that I couldn't see it!

Ok, I have to finally post my first post. I've been a proud owner of a new fiberglass pool just this season (build finished right before the NE got hit with the "polar vortex" last winter). Apart from the $60 or so bucks I spent with initial chlorine/CYA/CH/TA dose, I've spent...nothing (SWG). I'm still on my first bottle of MA.

I'm so glad I found this site during my build...Everyone marvels about how clear the water is! My wife laughs at my daily testing, but that's better than cleaning up a swamp!

I spend more time trying to grow grass and kill crabgrass than doing anything with the pool. Thank you TFPC!

Well, as I posted in another thread (or previous in this one - can't remember!!) I had received an email yesterday from my neighbor who bought a pool this year. She had picked up MA and borax and wanted to do the borates addition....I had pointed her to TFP and I swear she thinks it's a study course. She's on it day and night. She was afraid of the acid addition so I went over last evening and we (meaning me) did the addition. Received an email this morning that her pH is 7.5. She's excited!! I swear if she read it as 7.4 or 7.6 she would be worried!!

I have a friend who does nothing bu shocks his pool once a week ( 2 bags ) and runs his pump 24 hrs a day and claims thats all anyone should ever do blah blah blah... another friend who insists im killing my kids and my pool.... I laugh and say "so why hasnt my pool fallen apart yet?" "my kids are still alive and no rashes or anything"... But who am i?

The same guy who "knows everything" that I posted about earlier also cannot understand why my pool liner isn't faded. I don't bother to argue with him anymore. He has his SWG positioned before his heater, he adds algaecide and "shocks" weekly. He changes the sand in his filter EVERY YEAR! There is so much he does wrong. I've told him in a nice way but I don't bother to anymore. He will forever have a troublesome pool, unless a pool store directs him to TFP. Think that's gonna happen?

Oh, and the few times that his pool is clear, he has a real pretty green tint in his water. He won't unplug the copper probes on his SWG as I had suggested he do.

Pool stores I go to locally to buy what few things I do need told me "sand is good for a long time, it will filter better the 2nd year over the first year"

I do cheat a few times a week when im running behind and use the test strips to get a quick read on my FC :)

Couple weeks ago, he left town for business for a few weeks. No sooner than he was on the plane, his wife calls me and says "Dave, get your @** over here and fix this $*&^ pool before he gets back!!!" HAHA.. so I did. It was cloudy with algae behind the light and in the autofill and the aerator nozzles and in the waterfall pipe, and all the water parameters were way out of whack.

Four day SLAM and sparkly! That's awesome! How did he react when he got home?

^yes, inquiring minds want to know ;)

Here's what I do with all my extra pool-maintenance-free-time: swim ;)

Re: turning Canadians onto TFP -- @Dave, can TFP ship the kit to Canuks? I have a candidate for you who after a visit last week is highly interested...

No, tftestkits can not ship to Canada. Doing so would put his relationship with Taylor in jeopardy and they may lose them as a supplier.

Seems there have been a few Canuks recently buying K-2006 off ebay for cheaper than from Apollo.

Yup. 4 days It wasnt too bad yet. I just hammered it with chlorine and and kept it hammered a few ppm above SLAM level the whole time. Not 1 minute did it drop below 16 for 4 days. Nothing to it. Easy as pie.

And my buddy? He aint seen it yet. He is still gone! LOL... should be home sometime the next few days though.

They way the whole thing started is their pump quit running and come to find out, it was off for 3 days before another could get installed.

Anyways, my buddies wife called the pool store. Pool store says you need a new pump (without even coming to check it out). So she bought one from them and the pool store put it on. By that time, the water had started turning cloudy (they have a SWG, so NO chlorine at all was going on the pool, and it was too low as it was anyhow). The pool guy who put on the pump say "go to the store and whatshername will fix you up with stuff to make the water clear". So thats what happened, and my friends wife on a whim stopped at the "new" pool store in town which is right on her way home, they tested her water, and they told her the polar opposite of what the "regular" pool store folks said.

And thats when she called me and I went over armed to the teeth with my TF 100 and the pool math. I told her to take the few hundered $ worth of **** back to the pool store and get her money back. So she did, we slammed it, and now she is a believer.

And the pump that supposedly needed replacing per the pool store? Bad capacitor and I fixed that also for less than 25$ for the part. Thats when my friends wife went ballistic because they charged her 900$ for a whole new pump, (a single speed one no less) and so she went back to the pool store with me in tow, and ROYALLY, cussed them all out. She did a really good job of it too!!!! hahaha! It was hilarious! I'm still laughing about it!

Swampwoman, a birthday gift is the way to gol. That's how I get mine, even though I pay for it myself!! You would not believe how much the test kits and reagents are here in Canada. It's a total rip-off. I have a sister who lives in Florida and I get a birthday gift from her whenever I need new reagents. I was going to post some prices here, but it's probably against forum rules. What they charge here should be considered illegal.

Hey Divin Dave, great job on the SLAM!!

EDIT: By the way, when I get my reagents from Dave (duraleigh, TFTestkits.com) I know I am getting fresh reagents. I wouldn't be confident of that if buying from eBay or Apollo.

I'll throw in my 2 cents. I'm only about 3 weeks since my initial fill on a brand new pool (my first). A friend at work pointed me here when he heard I was putting in a pool. I peppered you guys with countless questions and had my TF-100 before they even turned a shovel of dirt in my back yard.

My parents stopped by for a swim last weekend. My mother overheard me telling my dad that I was trying to bring the FC down a bit because the SWG was a little more efficient than I'd anticipated. She says, "I was just going to ask you if you ever planned to chlorinate this thing. I've been swimming for an hour. My eyes don't burn and I can't smell a bit of chlorine. I was going to ask you if it's safe to keep swimming."

I told her, "You're fine. I was just able to find a good resource and I'm doing it right. Enjoy yourself."

I have 2 neighbors building pools at the moment. I haven't gotten hold of one of them yet. The other one looked at me like I was crazy when I talked to him about TFPC. He acted as if I'd lost my mind when I told him I want to spend my money on additional improvements to my back yard instead of budgeting for a pool service.

Then his wife poked him in the ribs and said, "But look at how pretty their water is."

I cleaned up a nasty mess last year that took me over a month ...when I opened this year while crossing my fingers to clear...it has been rather boring lol. I don't even test daily anymore. My pool likes a half to a full gallon a day . It's been clear all summer long. Thanks TFP. For making our pool care so boring!

Yesterday I referred a friend of mine to this site. He's one of those engineer types so it might take a while to make him understand. He's a second year, new pool owner and I'm a first. We have similar pool sizes, except he has a swg, which I don't quite comprehend the maintenance of, yet. I hope to visit in a few days to check out his set up. Hopefully, he reads this and follows the advice. Treat him nice:)

I have posted a link onto this site on friends' Facebook about a half dozen times. Not sure if anyone ever stopped by or not. Have a former coworker whose husband runs the locsl pool store. My SIL keeps them in business, ha ha. In the meantime, I use the money I am saving on upgrading pool accessories!
