Adding a Hayward Thru-the-Wall Skimmer to Intex Metal Frame Pool (PICS!

I installed this skimmer yesterday in a 15 foot index metal frame pool. My suggestions. Drain the pool to below skimmer. Hold faceplate to inside liner tight against top ridge. Using box cutter cut out liner. It is tougher than you think. Do not split butterfly gasket. Insert it into hole as it was intended. Put faceplate over gasket on inside. Insert all screws. Use a #3 bit. Attach skimmer. Fill pool. Tighten screws if it leaks.

I made the mistake of installing the new inflow valve too high. I forgot about having to lower water for skimmer. It works but is just below water.

I posted pics of my install in another thread.

Just thinking about cutting my liner but after marking, punching the holes and mounting the faceplate, I grabbed my fresh razor blade and it sliced like butter. No leaks and after I filled my pool and started the pump I saw even with the 635T filter, this skimmer is awesome!!!!! Thank you for all the knowledge on here!

How high can the water level be with the skimmer installed? Does the water level have to be at the bottom of the skimmer or can it be more in the middle or top? Is there a specification on this? Thanks in advance, I want to put in the skimmer but would like to keep the pool to the max water level I can.

I just installed the Hayward skimmer on my 15' Intex pool and it's working great. I followed HacoboPablo's excellent photo tutorial in this thread with a few small exceptions based on suggestions also in this thread by laceygirl and poolsam. The main difference was not splitting the butterfly gasket. The other differences were adding a ball valve and using an adapter rather than a hose clamp.

I first installed the skimmer on the pool without the gasket. I screwed it down nice and tight so it wouldn't move, then cut out the liner with an X-Acto knife using the inner plate as a guide. After cutting the liner I removed the skimmer and then reinstalled it with the butterfly gasket in place.

I did the entire job by myself and it took about 2 hours, which included the time to drain and refill the water. I probably could have done the job faster with a helper, but I worked slowly and carefully so I wouldn't mess anything up. Most of the job I did from inside the pool. It's scary working with sharp tools in the pool so I was extra careful and I really took my time. I wore thin rubber work gloves for a better grip on my tools so my wet hands wouldn't drop a tool or slip and make an extra hole in my liner.

As I said, I did not split the butterfly gasket and I'm not sure why you would want to do that, except maybe to avoid installing the skimmer twice. Yes that was a minor pain, but I think it's worth it because the installation seems cleaner this way. The butterfly gasket fits easily into the hole I cut out of the liner and the screw holes in the gasket all lined up perfectly on both sides of the liner, so reinstalling the skimmer was actually quite easy.

After the final installation of the skimmer, I added a Hayward ball valve directly below the skimmer so that I can turn off the water coming from the pool in case I ever want to disconnect my hoses without draining the pool.

I also wanted to avoid using hose clamps. I wanted to connect my Intex 2650 sand filter hose directly to the Hayward ball valve, so I bought these adapters from Doheny's. They come two to a pack so I have a spare. They included teflon tape but I didn't need it. I could have made my own adapter but these work perfectly, though I admit they are a little expensive.

Here is what the finished product looks like. It's a huge improvement over the floating Intex skimmer. Also the Hayward comes with a vacuum hose connector which makes vacuuming the pool so much easier. I'm very happy with my new skimmer.

HELP! installed same as OP, if I clean my filter cartridge is it going to drain my pool below skimmer if I don't have a on/off valve on the line?

Edit fooled it by putting filter on pool frame and putting inlet in skimmer

What parts do I need to add ball valve from skimmer to flex line?

Great install with pics!!!! One question though, any reason you went with the standard skimmer and not a widemouth, which would save a little water depth? I have considered this as well, just haven't gotten the motivation/ guts to do it! Lol I do have the Intex skimmer which does a decent job.

DigbyAllen, is the Hayward ball valve easy to turn? I know some pvc ball valves from the box stores are a pain to turn.

I don't have any problem turning it. In fact just today I had to turn it off (closed) so I was really glad I had it. What happened was this morning I was surprised to see water leaking pretty steadily from the skimmer basket on my sand filter. My pool had lost about 2" overnight. I immediately closed the ball valve and figured out what probably happened. I backwashed yesterday evening and cleaned out the skimmer basket on the sand filter but obviously I didn't tighten it sufficiently when I reassembled everything. Not sure how I didn't notice at the time. Luckily I caught it before the water level dropped below the skimmer inlet. That would have been a disaster but instead it is a good lesson to be more careful in the future.
