Baquacil Conversion (Starting 5/31)

From 10:30 last night until 7:30 this morning, the FC only dropped from 15 to 10? In comparison, the previous night's drop was from 15 to 3. One item to note is that I had to add 1.7 jugs of chlorine last night, so there is a chance I could have been a little heavy on that estimation as I just poured approximately 70% of the second jug. So FC may have started above 15. However, I feel like I should be seeing more of a drop this early in the process over a 9 hour span, but I don't know that for sure. I am still running the pump on recirculate. I am going to start running the pump through the filter when I am home in the evenings and can monitor the pressure and backwash. Thoughts?

Day #3

Used ~4.5 jugs (121oz @ 8.25%)

Up to ~17 jugs overall.

7:30am: FC was down to 10; increased to 15
6:00pm: FC was down to 1; increased to 15.
10:30pm: FC was down to 10; increased to 15.

I did a fair amount of brushing tonight.

I ran the pump with the filter on from 6:00pm-10:30pm and my pressure may have increased by 1. I thought the pressure would increase more and I would need to backwash often these first few days if I was running the pump on the filter setting. Is the chlorine just doing an exceptional job breaking down the Baquacil? I still backwashed. It was dark, so I didn't get a good look at the backwash discharge, but it didn't seem abnormal. Overnight and during the day, I am back to running the pump on recirculate.

When should I start seeing the Baqua-goo during the conversion? How thick is this Baqua-goo? Is it always on top, or can it settle to the bottom? Obviously, I cannot see the bottom at this time. Part of me is nervous that it is getting built up on the bottom of the pool, even though I am brushing and vacuuming daily.

Thoughts?

Day #4

Used ~4 jugs (121oz @ 8.25%)

Up to ~21 jugs overall.

6:45am: FC was down to 10; increased to 15
6:00pm: FC was down to 1; increased to 15.
9:30pm: FC was down to 11; increased to 15.

I did a fair amount of brushing tonight.

Is all bleach really the same (other than the concentrate %)? I started with Chlorox I picked up at Sam's Club, but I just bought some Target brand (Up & Up) bleach tonight (still 8.25%). Any reason not to switch the brand?

I ran the pump with the filter on from 6:00pm-9:30pm and my pressure did not change. I thought the pressure would increase more and I would need to backwash often these first few days if I was running the pump on the filter setting. Is the chlorine just doing an exceptional job breaking down the Baquacil? I still backwashed, and it didn't seem dirty. Overnight and during the day, I am back to running the pump on recirculate.

As long as it's unscented bleach, it's all good. There's no reason to keep using one brand of chlorine.

As for the Goo, often this can be found in the skimmer and other cracks. There is a chance you were low of baqua and will for little buildup. Just keep bleaching away, and the water color will change in time.

Day #5

12:30am: FC was down to 13; increased to 15.

I did some brushing tonight.

I ran the pump with the filter on from 6:00pm-12:30am and my pressure did not really change. Overnight and during the day, I am back to running the pump on recirculate.

I could see the bottom of my pool today!!

The water is continuing to get clearer.

Day #7

I was only able to treat the pool twice today.

Used ~3 jugs (121oz @ 8.25%)

Up to ~31 jugs overall.

8:00am: FC was down to 13; increased to 15
8:00pm: FC was down to 0.5; increased to 15.

I did some brushing tonight.

I ran the pump with the filter on from 8:00am this morning. The pressure hasn't changed all day, so I am going to continue to filter overnight and backwash tomorrow.

It seems I should be on track to only lose 1ppm of FC overnight within the next few days. Once I do that I will clean out my filter and change the filter sand. I will then add ~54oz of CYA to get to 30ppm. My plan is to place that amount in a sock either in the skimmer or in front of the return valve. I've read it can take a week before CYA will show up on tests and I should continue to maintain FC at 15. Is sending the FC to 15 in the morning and then in again in the evening sufficient at this point of the process? Or should I try to do it 3 times a day as I did during the first part of the conversion?

Is there a "best" time to test CC? Once my CC's are 0.5 or less for 2 days in a row, I can stop maintaining FC at 15 as the conversion is considered complete, correct? I can then get the chlorine to the recommended levels. Is there a preferred order to bring the pool to recommended levels? FC, pH, then TA? And then after a week, I can test to see if my CYA is in an acceptable range.

Is there anything I should be watching out for, or anything that I may be missing in these next few steps of this conversion?
