Green dust on bottom of pool

Cindy, the pic with the net certainly looks clear. So if you are still passing the OCLT, your water is clear, And you have .5 or lesc CC then you can stop shocking. Search some on here and you'll find some remedies for catching the really fine stuff. Somewhere there is a post about a slime bag or something that ot good reviews.

Good luck with the pollen. The pros will corrsct me if I've advised wrong on ending the shock process, but assuming the three criteria are met, seems right to me.

Cindy,

Its hard to say what your dealing without seeing it firsthand like we are. I am waiting to see if your DE addition and sock have helped or not before I can proceed with a recommendation. Have you looked at any of the green stuff up close? Does it feel slimy or gritty? You said none on the walls, just on the floor. Sure sounds like some type of blown in pollen or material.

Maybe its just the camera or the angle of the photos, but the water looks ok, but not the clearest i've seen. If you are passing the OCLT and the other 2 criteria to stop shocking, and water looks crystal before you stir up the stuff, to me that's enough to say its not algae. Vacuum it up and keep your FC at proper levels.

Good luck

Thanks everyone. The stuff on the bottom feels gritty...not slimy. Today my FC is 26.5, same as it was last night and my cc's are o. So I am going to stop shocking. I have been using DE all along but will add a skimmer sock today after I vacuum once again. I have been brushing everyday but I think I should vacuum first today before stirring it up again. So in the future if it is not on the walls and my chemical balance is OK, I probably do not need to shock but rather just vacuum it up???? I do have a lot of trees and I just noticed that our Royal Palonia is getting ready to bloom so there is probably a lot of stuff coming from there too. Guess there has to be a down side to the good side. All the trees make for a beautiful private oasis...but add a lot of work to keeping up a pool.

I ran my filter 24 hours a day all summer and still ended up with pollen. The skimmer sock helped. but it was the DE that finally cleared it up.

Also, your pool is not sparkly. Sorry to break that to you. I went through the same stages when trying to see some improvement from day to day, just for some encouragement. Once I did get back to sparkly, I remembered how nice that was.

I don't disagree with ROTjob about the pix not really showing sparkle. Clear, yes, but not sparkle. I too have dust or whatever in the liner wrinkles, but I think my water does look sparkly. Of course, angle, lighting, liner, etc all make it hard for others to really assess the pool as well as you can. But Rjob brings up a good point that maybe you haven't seen it sparkly for a while and have forgotten how good it can be. With your CYA that high, it is easy to think you may be living on the verge of an outbreak, even if the sediment is dust and pollen (as I suspect). Especially possible since I think you said you have "shocked" at high, but less than shock value.

So, if in fact she has clear water that is not as sparkly as it could be, AND she passes the OCLT (repeatedly) AND she has .5 or less CC, is she safe to stop shocking and assume the sparkle will return if she keeps good water chemistry, or must she maintain (or actually reach true shock level) until the sparkle returns?

If you have been using some DE all along the two things I would try is vacuuming to waste and I would try some clarifier to see if it will bind it together enough for the filter to catch it. If that does work and knowing these trees and pollen aren't going anywhere it makes your decision harder if you buy a knew filter. Sand filter are very low maintenance but they don't catch as fine a particles as DE and cartridge filters. I put in a sand filter this year and put Zeobrite in it and I am very happy with the clarity. But I have no idea how it will work with a heavy pollen load.

OK, I vacuumed the pool and no more grit on the bottom....probably at least until tomorrow morning.LOL!! As for being sparkly...it's clean and clear and when in full sun it is sparkly enough for me!I really appreciate all the help...I can not afford (nor would I want to) cut down all my trees. I am proud that I have a huge but cheap pool, all these trees in the mountains and am able to have less than .5 to 0 CC's. I work very hard. I just needed some input from those who have gone before me and done this already, so for those of you who have come to my support with your thoughts, I truly thank you. For those who feel that what I have done isn't quite good enough to call sparkly....well, I have tried. I am taking care of a hubby that needs a heart transplant, a sister who has had 2 strokes and is in a wheelchair and a Mother who is 78 and needs a lot of help, all in my home. I need my pool as an escape from reality so I try to maintain my little corner of the world. Thank you all for helping me to do that!
