I just learned that the water in my moms inground pool has been removed. The pool was built in 1982 not sure what it is made of but the plaster or gunite is coming off. Do not know how long the water has been out maybe two years could be more. I will post some pics. The pool is in Chico Ca.

Pool needs to be re-plastered, if that is your question. The majority of the plaster has fallen off and you see the gunnite shell.

Chico is pretty cold in the winter. The pool would have to be covered to have any luck at keeping it usable in the shoulder season. Not likely from November to March.
Cost is really dependent on services in that location, how much of the existing circulating equipment would be still usable, etc.
I would suggest budgeting $40K. Likely will be less if you have functional equipment, etc.

If you get into planning with any contractors, plan to abandon the main drain. It would likely have to be modified to pass current code and will add significant cost. No real need for a main drain.

Again, I would not plan to have use during winter.

It would be very costly. If you enclosed the entire pool area, sure. It can be done. That moves it to a HVAC issue as you have trapped the moisture from the pool. If you had a full automatic cover and large heater, might be reasonable, but you have an old pool that will not take an auto cover without major demolition.

You state you are 2 hours away. Plan on how you will maintain the water chemistry being that far away. A SWCG and some kind of automation may applicable.

What about a salt water pool can that work.
Yes.

What would have to be done.
You would add the SWG that you prefer to your equipment pad when you do the renovation.
And is it less or more maintenance?
Less maintenance while the SWG is running. Some chlorine will need to be added when the SWG doesn’t produce chlorine when temperatures fall (in winter). You’ll need to swing by to add MA to control your ph. Other chemicals as needed only.

Because of the cost to heat or it won't work? What if it was enclosed? Or covered and heated?
Enclosure example (starting at $5000.00):
Pool heater with installation, 400K BTU (if a gas line is in place): +/- $5000.00
Cost to heat per hour at current PG&E rates: $8.00+/hour. Need to know pool size for more accurate cost estimate.
Then add electric cost (PG&E?).
