Hi! Love this group and all the money you've saved me maintaining my pool. We have a Maytronics Dolphin robotic pool cleaner - purchased in 2019. It appears to be operating correctly as far as moving around the pool, but there doesn't appear to be any suction. It was definitely picking things up last month. We did use it as we opened the very dirty pool a few weeks ago. Is there something I can check on my own or do I need to take it in to be serviced?

Thanks for your help!

Check that the dump flap has not come loose. It allows the water to release when you pull the unit out of the water.

i,

I suggest that you remove the impeller and check to see if there is anything wrapped around the shaft. You have to remove the impeller to actually see it and remove it.

It is one of the few things you can actually fix.

If nothing is wrapped around the motor shaft, then most likely the motor is a goner.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Thanks for your quick replies! The dump flap is working. I had a lot of hair around the impeller so I was hopeful that would fix it. Unfortunately it did not. I guess I'll have to take it to a professional.

Ouch. That's crazy. And the motor box can be bad even if the pool is moving around correctly? 4 years seems like a crazy short life for a pool vacuum only used 4 months a year.

You can visually check if the suction motor doesn't spin (keep your fingers out of the blade) but the drive motor runs and that will confirm your problem. I have seen them start for a little bit if you spin the motor shaft, but that's only a temporary resolution.

Replacement motor drive units are expensive but easy to replace on these. The only easier cleaner to repair is probably a pool net. :)

If you end up replacing the whole drive unit or a whole new robot, I'll gladly take your bad drive unit off your hands. I need the drive motor, which appears to be working fine in your robot. Only source for the individual drive motor is for a used motor from place in isreal off Ebay. I'm not willing to send my money, in hopes that a used part makes it to me.

I've worrked on enough of the S200 variants enough now to know how to replace the individual pieces of the motor drive unit, but getting parts is impossible. I had friend whos Triton robot died because of a bad drive motor. I was able to swap out the main circuit board, to help my robot work for the last few months, but the drive motor is worn pretty bad, so who knows how long it will last.

Also - don’t throw away your controller! There’s quite the market for those on ebay etc. so you could recoup some of your loss.

djw,

Where are you buying the new motors???

Jim R.
I've been pulling parts from a buddies Triton that he donated to me. I've had success swapping the main board and rebuilding the gear reduction box that is attached to the drive motor. Most of the issues with these machines is water intrusion that comes from the drive motor. The packing seal around gear reduction shaft that sticks out of the motor unit wears out and it allows water to get into the unit itself. After that, it's just time before something goes bad. When I disected my buddies drive motor, the corrosion had eaten through the metal tab that holds the motor brush in place, so one of the poles would no longer make contact on the armature.

I'm actually 7 + years in with my Doheny Discovery S200 clone. Has been great, but I might be done with this series of Robots. I'm considering getting the EVO 614iq once we get back from vacation at the end of July.

That's good to know. Thanks for your help!
Sorry I was not meaning the motor itself, the entire motor box. I have had to replace 2 motor boxes on mine. Four year life is not unusual.
So are you saying that even if it is the suction motor, I can't really purchase that? I still have to purchase the entire motor box? Sorry, I only know enough to be dangerous. It looks like I can find motor boxes for $450. But it seems the suction motor would be cheaper if I could find it?

You might find the suction motor on fleabay, provenance unknown, but successfully opening the motor box and replacing the motor is a significantly more difficult project than swapping the motor box complete, but it is do-able if you are handy. And it might or might not work depending on the status of the other components inside the box and if there has been any leaks and if you seal it up successfully and don't break anything.

Swapping the entire motor box itself can be done with a screwdriver in about 5 minutes and a larger wallet.

This is why I love this group! Thank you so much. Sounds like I need whether to buy a motor box or a new vac.
