Wall Failure

I have an above ground pool that was installed by the previous homeowner in 2012. Based on documentation the previous owner left behind, it appears there was a wall patch placed over a hole in 2015. I have been in the house for just under 2 years but was unaware of the patch until now. Anyway, the wall failed yesterday while we had several people in the pool but luckily there were no injuries and limited deck damage. My question is, how can I go about repairing or replacing the damaged sections? My pump, filter, skimmer, etc. are all undamaged. Are there places I can purchase just the wall and pieces that were damaged?

Can't find anything on the make and model using Google. The paperwork states it is a Heritage Islander with Sahara walls. Not sure if that helps. Size is a 24' round with 52" walls. Would like to use the same size as I have a deck that was built around a large portion of the pool.

Have used this site and forum for lots of pool education when I first bought the house but this is my first post.

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Geoffrey

I’m so sorry to see this.

That pool wall may be beyond repairing, especially if there are other large areas of rust.

Have you looked elsewhere behind that liner for rust?

Wow. That's really sad to see. Dom asks the deciding question. If there are other areas badly rusted, repairing would be risky. Seven years ago before I installed a liner I discovered many dozen small rust holes on my pool wall but they were all 1/8" or smaller. I added 24 ga sheet metal around the entire perimeter up half way (24"). This was overkill. It is possible to patch a large rust hole if done right. The new sheet metal needs to be several inches larger at least and stitched properly onto the existing wall. It's obvious that your patch job was poorly done. The wall around the failure could have supported a proper patch.

I have a sad for both of you :( Time for a new pool. The wall is meant to be one piece with our pools. With that kind of failure you risk it happening again. We too have our deck around most of the pool so We had to redo several of the boards to make them meet the pool.

Hi, welcome to TFP! I am curious why the pool rusted at that particular point. When you take down the rest of the pool are there other areas of rust? I would not attempt to repair that pool. I would replace it with another pool, and I would check that the inside pool wall is primed before installation. Nicks or scratches will turn into future rust issues.

It looks like the pool wall failed in the exact outline of the stairs which suggests that somehow the stairs had (in part) cut into the liner, maybe at the top, which caused pool water to flow behind the liner. I do not know if short sections of pool wall can be purchased, but if so, you would most likely have to configure the repair in the same way that a normal pool wall would meet (a lot of bolts). It might be better to purchase a new pool wall, or new pool that is less expensive and use just only the wall. In the future, when adding pool stairs which are not really manufactured with liners in mind, consider padding the stairs where they meet the liner.
