How to clear your pool, aka Taking one for the team!

My first attempt was a dismal failure. I cannot get the diffuser to budge! So tomorrow I will either bust the older impeller off an even older dead motor and use that diffuser or I'll have to order a new one. Stay tuned folks, the laughs never end!

You know the old saying - "When all else fails....get a BIGGER hammer!!"

Good luck :)

I am losing my mind! Got most of the older impeller off of the older dead pump, however the seal and stem of the impeller remain permanently fused to the shaft. My vise grips have disappeared from my tool box and the magic hammer is insufficient to free the remains from the rusty grasp. In death they have become one.

OH no! Not the melded together and not even death do us part! argggggggggg

Hands off my tools! I have my own tool box and he has his. He learned REAL fast to make sure to put MY tools back in MY box instead of his. See mine is in the laundry room so much closer than his when doing house stuff so he tends to grab them first. They were ending up in the garage in his box. Well I put a LOCK on my box LOL stopped that mess! HA!

I hope you get it apart!

I know what part of the problem is, ao smith used bolts with the tensile strength of warm butter! I procured my bil's old dead pump to see if I could get that diffuser off. After the head of the first bolt snapped off in the socket I examined the bolts I removed from my recently dead motor. All but 1 snapped off after the first couple of threads. I now own 3 dead pumps with permanently affixed diffusers. I'm also out a 1/4" socket. Yay me.

Back in the day when I was married I had gotten so frustrated at never being able to find tools when I needed them that I bought my own set and put a combination lock on the box. He had a bad habit of leaving tools lying around where ever it was he was using them. Inside, outside, it didn't matter. Left them out in the rain, including power tools. :grrrr: I bought him his own set of tools and he lost or ruined most of them. I still find rusty screwdrivers lying around outside. A couple of times I allowed him to use my tools as long as he gave them back. I took the lock off and put it back when I got the tools back. The last time I was out of town and there was some sort of emergency so I had to give him the combination to the lock so he could use the tools. I get back home and the lock is gone. He "lost" it. In the house. Never to see the light of day again. I gave him the benefit of the doubt at the time, but reflecting on it after he left the son of a gun probably threw it away.

Rather than dwell on happier days I'm going to get a new pair of vise grips and another 1/4" socket.

Wow! This is turning into quite the project. I admire your resolve!

If it were me - "Mr. Pump meet The Trash. Trash, meet your new resident, Mr. Pump!" Then off to the inter-webs to buy myself the new VS pump of my dreams...

One of the unfortunate side effects of being a divorced mom of college students is a distinct lack of disposable income. However, with persistence and colorful language, victory is mine!

I'll say it again - I admire your persistence :salut:

Way to go mom!! Show that diffuser who's the BOSS :thequeen:

Did you know this is a stinking $50-108 part? Heck yeah I was going to be persistent or destroy it trying! Although this is my second time to swap motors the experience has moved it closer to the "not worth the bother" end of the repair spectrum. I had a choice of buying a new motor and buying a less expensive off brand pump which would have required some re-plumbing. At this point I think re-plumbing would have been easier!

The saga continues. Instead of a slot at the back of the pump shaft there is a hex key opening, so now I need to find a hex key the right size to hold the shaft still while I put the impeller on. All the ones I have are two small. The pump seal I bought does not fit on the impeller shaft either. Been working inside as much as possible since it is 9000 degrees outside, and my pool is back to dark green since I haven't had time to deal with the water. I'm sooo close to getting this thing going again!

Once more life throws a slight curve in the plans. Tuesday night we found a couple of abandon kittens, roughly 5 weeks old, so I had to get supplies to take care of them and did not make it back to the pool store for another shaft seal. Bought one Wednesday afternoon, but by the time grocery shopping was done and dinner was cooked and eaten it was too late to do anything. Tomorrow! (actually today!)

LOL Just think the kittens can "help" you fix the pump. So sweet of you to take them in. At least they are old enough to eat on their own.

Think if the fun names you can give them.....curve ball, Shift in plans, etc.
