I need to shock my pool since combined chlorine level is too high.
I have been adviced to replace the water and not shock the pool since at high levels chlorine might attack the pool material and damage it.
I own an Intex above the gound metal frame pool and my shock level is 13ppm.
Is this a true risk?
Thanks,
Avi.

Absolutely not. That's why we teach testing and dosing carefully. 13ppm is fine..........200ppm will likely damage your pool.

Did you consult the FC/CYA chart (in Pool School) to get that 13ppm?

Thanks for the quick reply.
I got the 13ppm from the pool calculator based on my CYA level.
It said 13ppm for shock and 19ppm for mustard algae shock.
Should I use the chart or the pool calculator is also good?
Avi.

Either is fine. There is some variance but not enough to make any difference.

What they said, with one caveat: If you use granular chlorine instead of bleach, don't just throw it in and let it sit on the bottom to dissolve. Unless you like polka dots.
