is there a way, test or procedure to learn how to measure cya readings? i would assume someone has an idea of how to use water and maybe a small pre measured amount of some form of cya in a tube or measuring cup to get a base reading so beginners know how and what to look for and what the final reading should look like.

Order the test solution from tftestkits and that helps tune your testing procedure.

You have passed the OCLT when: 1)You lose 1ppm or less FC overnight, & 2)You have .5ppm CC's or less, & 3)your water is clear.

that link tells you how to do it and show it but it doesn't tell you how to get a predetermined amount so you can evaluate your results under different light levels so you can make adjustments in reading if you have to do without the recommended indirect sunlight

The test solution Bama mentioned does provide a predetermined result (50 ppm).
